Sands acts as the Director for the Middle School (Trunk) Treehort and as the Unit of Study and Literacy teacher and mentor for Manzanita’s 8th grade class. He has been teaching for over 15 years, with much of his teaching experience being in South Korea where he taught English at the primary, secondary, and college levels, as well as teaching social studies for middle school students, mostly in international schools. He has traveled extensively in Asia, and one of his fondest memories is playing ice hockey in Mongolia on an outdoor rink on a brisk -27° day. He finds it meaningful that he gets the opportunity to help young people realize their gifts, expand their edges, and use their voices as they continue to co-create, build, and grow the community. Being able to do that in such an amazingly beautiful place makes it all the more special. Outside school hours, Sands can be found hiking with his dog, surfing, playing hockey, reading a good book, cooking, and enjoying his two children’s musical performances and soccer games.

Educational Background: Sands holds a B.A. in Political Science from San Francisco State University and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham. He has also received certifications in holding Council and in Wilderness First Aid.
