MARK MCMILLAN

Mark McMillan joined the Manzanita team shortly after the start of the 2021-22 school year. His first assignment was as a ‘floating’ substitute, covering many different classes. Before Winter Break, Mark was brought on full-time, and now is a class Naturalist and supporting the High School literacy class for the 22-23 school year. Mark is a strong and compassionate presence among the students, and a friendly and supportive colleague to everyone at our school. Currently Mark works with several classes, providing math support, and other adjunct roles. Mark also covers classes as a substitute for all grades, and has provided support on Hawk Days with his well-honed nature skills.  Mark writes, “one thing I’ve dedicated my life to is healing the disconnect between humans and our living earth ecosystems. I’ve come to realize that how we bring up our children is the key to shifting society in this direction. I believe strongly in the possibility of reforming the way we do schooling as a society--one that sparks the child's curiosity more than feeding them a regimented curriculum. There is bursting curiosity in children, and one of my favorite things is to be there when curiosity strikes, and to be able to assist in opening up their understanding. If we can harness and fuel that curiosity, providing support for healthy ways of coexisting with our surrounding world, I believe the future will be an increasingly better place.” Mark has travelled and studied extensively, and holds a double-degree in Spanish and Business. He also holds a California Substitute Teaching Credential. He has worked with youth in many diverse settings, including camps and schools, prior to coming to Manzanita. Mark is an avid and skilled naturalist, with a keen knowledge of birds. We are so grateful to have Mark as a member of our team at Manzanita.
